Recently, I was given a really nice Risen Drums Maple Satin 5-piece custom drum kit (picture ).Shell sizes are as follows:24” Kick + Wood hoops12” Rack Tom16” Floor Tom18” Floor Tom14” Aluminum SnareI looked up the price on this kit, and to buy one brand new from RD it would cost around $5,100. This appears to be one of the most expensive kits they make. Mine is in excellent condition as it’s only been played lightly for about two years. It only has a couple cosmetic stuffs around the rims on the kick drum, and a few on a couple of the toms.
I’m not an expert on pricing used gear, but I’m guessing this kit is worth around $2500-$3000. (Correct me if I’m wrong). The only problem is that I already have my own kit and I don’t particularly care for the choice of the shell sizes on the Risen. I also don’t have room for another drum kit in the house. Right now I’m thinking of selling the kit and buying myself a new American Fender Jazz Bass.
However, I’m not exactly sure what the best option is to maximize the sale price. So far I’ve got four options: eBay, craigslist, and maybe swapping at a gear exchange or guitar center.Ebay: This probably would get me the most money(?), but I’m not too sure how the shipping process would work. I’d end up breaking this into 4-5 boxes and I’m not a big fan of shipping large items. The possibility of damage in transit also concerns me.Craigslist: My state doesn’t really have a big music scene, so I either would probably have to cut the price really low. I don’t really like strange people coming to my house either.Gear Exchange: There’s a local shop that specializes in buying/swapping used gear. Because it’s an actual business and they have an overhead, I’m sure I’d lose money on a cash sale, and probably in a swap also.Guitar Center: It’s a given I’ll lose money in a transaction with GC, but the selection of instruments to swap for is much larger. Not sure if it would be worth it.I’ve never really sold or traded any drums before, and I’m really not sure what I should do.
Any suggestions or ideas on how to go about this? Also, any opinions on a sale price and/or the lowest you would take for it would also be great. There is a big misconception about 'custom' drums. First off, what you have. You have a generic Keller-shell maple kit with generic drum hardware in a generic finish with generic sizes. There is nothing special about this kit. It is a decent kit because of the keller shells, but nothing about this kit is special. Given that it comes with no guarantees, no warranties, no nothing, you would have to price it below what you could get a similar kit from a regular manufacturer for (think Pearl Maple Reserve).
This means the most the kit could be worth, is less than $2,100. I'd think it's more likely to go in the $1000-$1500 range. The reality is - These kits are quite literally a dime a dozen. They don't move quickly, and everybody assumes that because it cost 'xxxx' amount new it is worth a lot used.
It simply isn't. I've seen one of these locally for 6-8 months in the $2,500 range, hasn't sold yet. Because a Pearl kit will cost the same and come with a lifetime shell warranty.Food for thought.-It may well be the cause of Bender's illness. But more importantly, it's a flimsy pretext to try out my latest invention. To the laboratory!-.
